You could build a power supply for it (See link below).
You could send voice over it, by modulating the power supplied to the diode. With AM modulation, you would put the secondary winding of a small transformer in series with the power supply, then use an audio amplifier to apply audio to the other winding of the transformer.
To recieve the audio, you would use photo cell attached to another audio amplifier

Fiber is pretty unsafe by design.
Fairly powerful light is emitted in the transmission process using fiber optics, the light can be extremely dangerous to the naked eye. If you were to look into the end of a fiber in transmission you would not blink because the light is invisible to the eye, however it would burn your retina and cause permanent damage.
Also the shards of glass used in a fiber optic medium are nearly invisible (size of the human hair and clear). These shards can easily become embedded in the skin. Our body does not defend against shards of glass as it does not see them as harmful, so they will stay in our body's forever unless we manually pick them out. (Our body will push out most harmful materials on its own)
It is important to use PPE or Personal Protective equipment when working with fiber. I recommend protective goggles, a black mat for stripping and splicing fiber for easily seeing stray fibers. It is also important to have a dedicated fiber disposal area, as they are not meant to be disposed of in a regular trash can with the rest of your garbage, it could potentially cut through the bag or harm someone taking out the trash.
Fiber can indeed be dangerous, however if the right precautions are taken it is no more harmful than a copper medium such as coaxial cabling.
