Last night we sat down to watch a DVD and it displayed a split screen...the right half of the screen was on the left , and the left on the right.
My fiance believes that the DVD player was somehow jarred and the laser thrown off alignment.
Can he open the DVD player and re-align the laser?
It's not the laser.
The laser reads the bits on the disk, which are basically stored as an MPEG2 or MPEG4 file. If the laser was out of aligment, you wouldn't get any picture, and you'd hear the servo inside making a little noise, trying to find the disk - servos are the little electromagnets that move the laser's lens in and out to optimal focus automatically.
After the file gets read, the picture gets converted to analog for NTSC TVs. If the sync pulse got messed up, in the analog circuitry, that would be my first guess. Usually, though, all that is inside a tiny chip, and to desolder one of those and replace it requires a fair bit of skill.

Okay, just about everyone has a red laser pointer. Heck, we even sell a fine one here at ThinkGeek. But, we're pretty sure you want to be a superior geek - and doing it with a green laser is the way to go. This pointer is significantly brighter (about 50 times) than a red laser pointer and because of its unusual color it is much more noticeable. In electronics, a diode is a two-terminal electronic component that conducts electric current in only one direction. The term usually refers to a semiconductor diode, the most common type today. Legally you cant. Lasers are rated by class (1 being smallest and 4 being more powerful). If you alter the class of laser it has to be re-calibrated to put into a new class of laser. The visibility of a laser depends more on atmospheric conditons than the power of the laser. A more powerful laser will be seen farther under given conditions that a lower power one but much depends on something for it to reflect off of. If there is moisture or dust in the air you'll see the laser beam as it's reflected of the water vapor or the dust particles. If the sky is clear with no dust or moisture you won't see the beam. If the air is clear but with high clouds, you'll see the laser as it hits the clouds but not the beam on the way up.
