Digital Thermometer Laser

My baby's temperature is.. below normal?

Ok, this is strange. The last few weeks my baby has been always fussy....colic stage...so I have been in the habit of taking her temp alot just incase she is fussing for something else. Always its in the normal range 36.4 to -38 degrees celius or 97.5 to 100.4 degrees fahrenheit for a baby 0-2 months. (she is just over two months but the next bracket in my booklet for temps says 3-10 months and because she is not yet 3months I'm still looking at the first bracket.
She has always been in the normal range but today... she was below...not by much. I have a laser digital thermometer that you take in the ear and today I tool it 3 times, and it was 35.6, 35.7, 35.8 ok, its a fraction below normal but here is the thing. Why below? I am living in the middle of a heat wave here in Greece! And also her normal temp history is a degree above those readings.
Ok, new mum here, we're always paranoid... tell me this is ok?

Also, I'm in Greece as well, and because of the heat wave, we have the airconditioning on all the time. I read just recently that babies can't regulate their temperature like we can. Their temp drops when they're a little cold. So it could be the airconditioning. She should be okay if she's not cranky and looks happy and everything, but why don't you call the doctor just to put your mind at ease.
My baby seems fine otherwise, but I 'll just call the doc to make sure. Also my temperature has always been less than normal too, so maybe it depends on the person.

Oh, and you can still nurse your baby with a cold. In fact it's the best thing you can do, so she won't get sick. Even if she does get the cold, she 'll recover way quicker than if you weren't nursing.

binocular. Two images gathered on a known baseline are brought into coincidence by a system of mirrors and prisms. The adjustment is used to determine distance. Used in some cameras (called range-finder cameras) and on a larger scale in early battleship range-finder

interferometer. Interference fringes between transmitted and reflected lightwaves produced by a coherent source such as a laser are counted and the distance is calculated. Capable of extremely high precision.

Scintillometers measure atmospheric optical disturbances.

 

Acoustic sound sensors: microphones, hydrophones, seismometers.

 

Acoustic: uses ultrasound time-of-flight echo return. Used in mid 20th century polaroid cameras and applied also to robotics. Even older systems like Fathometers (and fish finders) and other 'Tactical Active' Sonar (Sound Navigation And Ranging) systems in naval applications which mostly use audible sound frequencies.

Non Initialized systems

 

Gray code strip or wheel- a number of photo detectors can sense a pattern, creating a binary number. The gray code is a mutated pattern that ensures that only one bit of information changes with each measured step, thus avoiding ambiguities.

 

Initialized systems

These require starting from a known distance and accumulate incremental changes in measurements.

 

Quadrature wheel- An disk-shaped optical mask is driven by a gear train. Two photocells detecting light passing through the mask can determine a partial revolution of the mask and the direction of that rotation.

Classification of measurement errors

A good sensor obeys the following rules:

 

the sensor should be sensitive to the measured property

the sensor should be insensitive to any other property

the sensor should not influence the measured property

In the ideal situation, the output signal of a sensor is exactly proportional to the value of the measured property. The gain is then defined as the ratio between output signal and measured property. For example, if a sensor measures temperature and has a voltage output, the gain is a constant with the unit [V/K].

 

If the sensor is not ideal, several types of deviations can be observed:

 

The gain may in practice differ from the value specified. This is called a gain error.

Since the range of the output signal is always limited, the output signal will eventually clip when the measured property exceeds the limits. The full scale range defines the outmost values of the measured property where the sensor errors are within the specified range.

If the output signal is not zero when the measured property is zero, the sensor has an offset or bias. This is defined as the output of the sensor at zero input.

If the gain is not constant, this is called nonlinearity. Usually this is defined by the amount the output differs from ideal behavior over the full range of the sensor, often noted as a percentage of the full range.

If the deviation is caused by a rapid change of the measured property over time, there is a dynamic error. Often, this behavior is described with a bode plot showing gain error and phase shift as function of the frequency of a periodic input signal.

If the output signal slowly changes independent of the measured property, this is defined as drift.

Long term drift usually indicates a slow degradation of sensor properties over a long period of time. Noise is a random deviation of the signal that varies in time.

 

Hysteresis is an error caused by the fact that the sensor not instantly follows the change of the property being measured, and therefore involves the history of the measured property.

If the sensor has a digital output, the signal is discrete and is essentially an approximation of the measured property. The approximation error is also called digitization error.

If the signal is monitored digitally, limitation of the sampling frequency also causes a dynamic error.

 Sensor may to some extent be sensitive for other properties than the property being measured. For example, most sensors are influenced by the temperature of their environment.

All these deviations can be classified as systematic errors or random errors. Systematic errors can sometimes be compensated for by means of some kind of calibration strategy. Noise is a random error that can be reduced by signal processing, such as filtering, usually at the expense of the dynamic behaviour of the sensor.

 

 

Resolution

 

The resolution of a sensor is the smallest change it can detect in the quantity that it is measuring. Often in a digital display, the least significant digit will fluctuate, indicating that changes of that magnitude are only just resolved. The resolution is related to the precision with which the measurement is made. For example, a scanning probe (a fine tip near a surface collects an electron tunneling current) can resolve atoms and molecules.

All living organisms contain biological sensors with functions similar to those of the mechanical devices described. Most of these are specialized cells that are sensitive to:

 

Light, motion, temperature, magnetic fields, gravity, humidity, vibration, pressure, electrical fields, sound, and other physical aspects of the external environment;

Physical aspects of the internal environment, such as stretch, motion of the organism, and position of appendages (proprioception);

an enormous array of environmental molecules, including toxins, nutrients, and pheromones;

Many aspects of the internal metabolic milieu, such as glucose level, oxygen level, or osmolality;

Things to Know About the Polarized Light Microscope

The polarized light microscope, which sadly is one of the undervalued investigative tools, offers a wealth of opportunities and potentials. For one thing, it brings with it the benefits of bright field microscopy. For another thing, it exploits the optical characteristics of anisotropy in order to reveal the detailed information regarding the composition and structure of the materials, which are indeed invaluable for diagnostic and identification purposes.

Components of the Microscope

Due to its use in the observation and photography of specimens for their optically anisotropic properties, the polarized light microscope must be equipped with the following components:

* The polarizer is positioned in the light path of the specimen
* The analyzer, which acts as the second polarizer, is positioned in the optical pathway between the observation/camera ports and the objective rear aperture

The image contrast comes from the interaction of the plane-polarized light with the doubly- refracting specimen, which will then generate two individual wave components. In turn, these are polarized in perpendicular planes. The velocities and the propagation direction of these components vary depending on the specimen under study.

After exiting the specimen, said light components subsequently become out of phase. However, the constructive and destructive interference of the analyzer recombine these light components to form a cohesive and detailed image.

When compared with techniques such as bright field and dark field illumination, phase contrast, Hoffman modulation contrast, differential interference contrast, and fluorescence, the technology behind the polarized light microscope is such that it significantly improves on the quality of the specimen image obtained.

Configuration of the Microscope

It must be emphasized that the microscope using polarized light is very similar to the bright field microscope. However, there are significant differences especially in the additional components, which are unique in microscopes of this kind.

Said special components include the abovementioned polarizer and analyzer, the objectives and condenser, the Bertrand lens, the circular graduated stage able to complete a 360-degree rotation, and the opening in the microscope body. The latter may also be used or the intermediate tube for compensators, which include can be a full-wave retardation plate, or quarter-wavelength plate, or a quartz wedge.

When the polarizer and analyzer are removed, the polarized light microscope becomes equal in applications as the common bright field microscope in terms of its optical characteristics. Of course, the other components stay in place.

Alignment of the Microscope

When using the microscope, the proper alignment of all mechanical and optical components is a very critical factor in the proper magnification and observation of the specimens. Thus, proper alignment must be performed before undertaking quantitative analysis either with crossed polarizers or in combinations with compensators and retardation plates. Each specimen requires a different set of alignment so it is always best to refer to the users' manual in this respect.

Indeed, the polarized light microscope has many uses and applications for students and researchers alike. The trick is in using the microscope the proper way, of which experience and common sense in following instructions are the most important in this respect.

Bikini line laser hair removal?

I don't want to be completely bald down there, but I heard that the first time you have laser hair removal, the hair doesn't actually go away completely. Supposedly the remaining hair will grow thinner. I was wondering if having laser hair removal for the entire area * down there* in the first session, and then actually just having laser hair removal where I want to be completely hairless in the second session is a good idea? Please share your experiences if you have any, or your friend's experiences with this.

It takes about 6 sessions to become completely hairless.
I've had 2 so far and lost about half of the original hair =)

Okay... science answer:

You grow in at least 80% of your hair during puberty. When you have laser hair removal the hairs it kills will never grow again. But you still have up to 20% of your normal thickness that will grow in throughout the rest of your life. So people get touch up sessions every 3-5 years after their big 6 treatments. You need about 6 treatments, one each 2 months for a year, because the hair grows in different stages and it can only kill hair in the active growth stage.

Personal Experience:
I've had 2 out of my 6 treatments so far. It HURTS! I've had my legs, underarms, and bikini area done. When you get your bikini area done they do ALL of it! Including spreading your butt and vaginal lips spart to laser all the cracks... It's sorta awkward. After the 2 treatments I've had so far I've lost about 60% of leg hair, 40% bikini hair, and 25% underarms hair. It's because the underarms hair is the thinnest and the leg hair is the coarsest. But the legs are the most painful. The more it hurts the better it works.

Look at the spectrum of visible light. Relative to the spectrum of a laser, the spectrum of light is quite wide. A laser emits only one frequency of waves when it is activated, as opposed to an incandescent bulb. An incandescent bulb emits all frequencies of visible light when it is on, thus the white/ light. A lack of a certain color (like less red emision) will cause the bulb to look a color different than white (in this case, it would look yellow). That's why lasers are monochromatic, or one color.

you can see a strong continuous-spectrum fiber laser beam diffracted on a diffraction grating.

Given that the dimensions of the top face of the box are 300x250 mm, assuming that the white beam is parallel to this face and neglecting perspective corrections, can you compute the grating constant of the diffraction grating used to decompose the beam?

I have not tried this but you should have all the data you need, except for some general physical constants. Good luck and have fun

However, are you sure you did it right? The top face in your image is a rectangle but the side ratio does not match my prescribed 6:5. I think that one more stretching is needed, which will change the angle of the first order maximum.

It says it is a class 4 laser, but is it? Or is this just based on its energy density? And if so, I wonder about the source and the focusing to get that kind of output. All and all, it is pretty interesting stuff.

I will have to double check the dimensions and your ideas. (Have to go right now). What I did was to get the box top so that it had right angle edges. That way the plane that the light beam is in should also be correct rather than simply a perspective.
