Diode City

Diode City

$7.98

The 1998 record Diode City, the third for Japanese rockers Supersnazz, presents a change for the band. Not only is the once all-girl group now a girl group with male drummer -- Shoe, who formerly did drumming duties for Teengenerate has replaced Skinny Minny -- but this is a more poppy and playful album than their 1993 debut Superstupid!, with a cleaner sound and vocals, and lyrics that are more comprehensible. The band has also improved as songwriters and musicians, crafting songs for this album that have more layers of texture and greater complexity. But while it's hard to fault a band for getting better, some of their former tough energy is lost, like a street punk who learns to fight and doesn't need to hide behind his sneer anymore because he knows he can hold his own now. The band still takes the innocence and sound of American rock & roll from the 1950s and '60s as their foundation, and energizes with their own dose of pop-punk attitude. The album opens with "Words of Love," a sappy but infectious love song like those from the American Bandstand days, whose catchy rhythm ricochets into a fiery guitar solo. Kanako's guitar has a cool, slinky spy theme sound in "Diode City" and a surf flavor on "Tell No Tale." Their cover of "I Wonder," previously recorded by the Ronettes and the Crystals, retains the crooning backing harmonies, but Spike's vocals have some of the atonal zest of Poly Styrene from X-Ray Spex. The best songs, "Too Fast" and "17-18," have the band's old verve, teetering on the edge of disaster and offering listeners a rush of adrenaline when the band screeches to a halt at the end. These moments make Diode City a fun album, but Superstupid! has not been shaken from its classic status. ~ Sarah Tomlinson, Rovi Performers: Tsutomu Oikawa - Recorder; Kanako - Guitar, Vocals; Marky "Miyagi" Magmatone - Guitar; Nishi - Piano; Rockin' Enocky Thunderbolt - Guitar; Rockin' Thunderbolt Enocky - Guitar; Shoe - Drums; Shoe. - Drums; Spike - Vocals; Tomoko - Voc

8 Steps to Designing a Perfect Sign For Every Purpose

1. General Considerations In Designing a Sign

A commanding, effective sign will help your business grow, your message get across, your location get known, or your candidate get elected, so be sure to choose the best sign design for your specific location and application!

Many different types of signs are produced in the United States these days, and the right kind and size of the sign needs to be chosen wisely for each application. Every application will have its own unique and widely ranging issues related to it.

The first thing to do is determine the general type of sign you're going to design:

• large or small?
• poster, or printed?
• something backlit or edgelit?
• neon?
• prismatic?

2. Getting Down to The Details

Once the general size and type are determined, it's time to start thinking through the details. When designing a new business or government sign, there are certain items that always need to be taken into consideration, such as:

• what is the general application?
• will this be used indoor or outdoor?
• what type of lighting will be used if any?
• what materials will be used in its construction?
• how will it be mounted?
• and so on.

3. Tailoring the Design to the Sign's Future Use

Some important contextual items to consider with a new sign include:

• what need does it fulfill?
• does it command attention?
• will it be viewed by pedestrians or motorists?
• is it compliant with UL and the local municipality sign regulations?
• what are the power requirements and restrictions?
• will it be permanent or portable?

4. Coordinating With the End-Users

If the sign is for an end users who have provided you with a sketch of their idea, whether on a bar napkin or sophisticated computer drawings, make sure you thoroughly discuss their wants and needs, and go through all aspects of its design with them:

• what is the overall look of the sign?
• are there weight restrictions?
• are there critical dimensions anywhere?
• where and how will the sign be displayed?

Some users will have very specific details of their design and others will rely on your experience and creativity to realize their vision.

5. Illuminating the Sign

If the sign is to be illuminated, there's a whole new set of considerations, and a few different light sources that you can use:

• Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are becoming more popular everyday as the costs are coming down and the quality is going up;
• Fluorescent bulbs are in large use and come in a wide variety of shapes and lengths and color temperatures;
• Energy-eating incandescent bulbs are becoming less and less common all the time, and are even banned completely in some locations;
• Neon lamps should still be around for quite awhile due to their unique properties.

Some other types of lighting to consider are Cold Cathode Tubes, Electro Luminescent Panels, Low Pressure Sodium Lamps, and High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamps. HIDs include: Mercury Vapor, Metal Halide, & High Pressure Sodium.

6. Adding Back Lighting for Backlit Displays

When a sign is to have back lighting, yet another set of considerations must be addressed. For example:

• the depth of the sign is very important.
• he distance of the light source to the diffuser panel and/or the graphics material needs to be far enough so that the individual bulbs or tubes cannot be seen.
• there needs to be an overlapping of the light sources so that hot spots and darker areas are not present.
• the spacing between the light sources is also equally important for even lighting across the entire surface.

7. Considering the Environment

With indoor signs the environment is usually not much of a concern, but with outdoor signs the local environment will play a huge role in the sign's design. Things that must be considered include:

• the annual average local rainfall is always something to consider, and properly sealing the sign against rainwater is a must;
• in cold northern climates, heaters may be required;
• in hot southern climates, exhaust fans or air conditioners may be needed;
• along the ocean's coasts, salt spray will influence the material selection to reduce corrosion;
• in areas that are prone to hurricanes, the structure needs to be extra strong to withstand the high wind loads;
• and always check with the local municipal codes governing signs in that area!

8. Maintaining the Sign

An often-overlooked item is sign maintenance. If you have large sign that is mounted on top of a 90' pole, you will want to use the longest lasting lights that are available. Every time a cherry picker truck is needed just to change a bulb will cost you money, which should have been used initially for the best, longest lasting lighting system around.

AURIGA XL Holmium YAG Laser Surgery - HoLEP - Lynton Lasers Ltd

Facet Ablation

Nerve Ablation is a surgery that can be used to treat the following conditions:

•    Facet Arthritis

•    Spinal Stenosis

•    Sprains and Strains

The goal of this surgery is to destroy, or ablate specific nerve endings around the structures in the spine that are causing pain, often this nerve pain is caused by compression or rubbing from surrounding structures.
This surgery can be done two ways, one way uses radio frequency and the one way would use lasers.

Radio Frequency Nerve Ablation

Radio Frequency Nerve Ablation is a minimally invasive surgery that can be performed on an outpatient basis. It works by heating up specific nerves in the area of the spine that is causing your pain, as you heat up the nerves if temporarily turns them off or kills them so that they can no longer send pain signals to the brain.

The surgical procedure is quite simple.

•    Your surgeon would perform the surgery using a television x-ray or some other live way of directly visualizing the area. This is done to verify placement of the needle that must be used, and to mark the location of where the needle would need to be inserted

•    A needle would be inserted through your back and into the affected area; an electrode is then inserted through the needle

•    Radio Frequency current is then sent through this electrode into the tissue surrounding the painful area to heat it up

•    The nerves are now temporality deadened turning off any pain signals being sent to the brain

Laser Facet Ablation

This is very similar to a Radio Frequency Nerve Ablation but a laser is used to heat up the surrounding tissue and nerves that are causing pain. One laser that is commonly used is the holmium yag laser.  This is the preferred laser due to it not having a high degree of tissue penetration so it does not damage otherwise healthy tissue.

This surgery is also quite simple

•    Your surgeon would perform the surgery using a television x-ray or some other live way of directly visualizing the area. They would make a small incision and insert a small tube; through this tube the fiber optic cable is inserted

•    The laser is turned on and it will vaporize the nerve endings that are sending pain signals to your brain

•    Once this is done it will be removed along with the tube, the small incision will be stitched up
Success rates for this surgery are extremely variable and it should be noted that pain has been known to come back in 6-8 months due to the nerves regenerating themselves

If you would like more information on these two surgeries or you think you are suffering from facet arthritis, spinal stenosis or sprains and strains in your back and you would like more information on treatment options it is best for you to consult with a physician so they can perform a full examination and review your medical history.

Diode Anode Cathode Polarity

What are the polarities of the anode and the cathode?

Just to explain, I do -not- need a complex answer involving lots of technicalities. All I need to know is which way to connect a diode in a (relatively simple) circuit.

The anode is the positive + terminal and the cathode is the negative - terminal.

Anode

Anode

$12.78

Experimental composer/improvisers have long had a fascination with developing systems that manage to combine the two. For example, a system of rules might be applied which constrains players within certain guidelines where, as long as they don't exceed certain boundaries, they are free to improvise. John Zorn' s game pieces such as Cobra come to mind, which he likened to a baseball game where, despite fairly rigid rules being in effect, the outcome is uncertain, although it will always retain the character of baseball. Otomo Yoshihide had a long history of brilliant work in improvised ensembles (as well as rock and jazz groups) and had been devoting much of his time prior to this recording investigating ultra-quiet free improvisation utilizing sine waves and extremely abstract electronics, resulting in delicate music at the very edge of hearing. His previous recording for Tzadik, Cathode, was very much in this area. The listener is quite taken aback, therefore, at the sheer volume and ferocity of the initial composition here, a virtual onslaught of percussion and electronic noise. The instructions to the musicians were to "play loudly and create new sounds before the previous sounds disappear." There is no real chance to listen to the fellow performers, much less react to what they are playing. The result is a giddy, almost neurotic welter of harsh banging whose purpose, contrary to most free improvisation, is not to cohere but to open up a new and difficult space when free improv gets too comfortable. The music thus becomes difficult on a whole other level than normally difficult music. One cannot give Yoshihide too much credit for refusing to play by the rules, even if those rules are supposedly infinitely flexible. Similarly on the two relatively quieter pieces, "Anode 2" and "Anode 3," he instructs his players, "Do not respond to the sound of others," asking for the near-impossible. The works have something in common with the music of groups like AMM, but there is a subtle difference, as if by setting up roadblocks Yoshihide has forced his participants into new and unexplored territory. Anode is a fascinating album and perhaps will be regarded as a major signpost in the continuing history of creative music. ~ Brian Olewnick, Rovi Performers: Furuta Mari - Crotale, Percussion; Itoken - Crotale, Percussion; Akiyama Tetsuji - Turntables; Sachiko M - Electronics; Tetuzi Akiyama - Turntables; Yoko Nishi - Koto;

Calculate period of half rectification transformer?

So the circuit layout is here:

http://wpcontent.answers.com/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9b/Halfwave.rectifier.en.png/500px-Halfwave.rectifier.en.png

with an input of 120V AC, R of 10k and diode with about (0.6V voltage drop)
Do I have sufficient info to calculate the period of that waveform??
So is the AC power supply in the US always 60Hz?

yes, the period is the same as the input frequency, which is 60 Hz with a period of 16.67 mS in the US, or 50 Hz with a period of 20 mS in Europe.

Why are there so many different diodes?

what else do they do besides block the flow of current in one direction, I know some have higher amp ratings, but do they do anything else. Do they change waveform or anything like that?

Silicon signal diodes like the 1N4148 are all very similar in characteristics, but the different types vary in maximum reverse voltage, capacitance, switching speed, temperature range, package, etc.
There are also rectifier diodes (power devices), fast rectifiers, shottky signal diodes (low forward voltage drop, fast), shottky rectifiers (ditto, higher power) and zener diodes (used as voltage limiters / regulators).

And then of course there are many different manufacturers each making their own devices which might be just the same as the competitors'.
