Splitter Laser Mirror What is the simplest possible setup for producing hologram *using lasers* at home ?
Is it possible to use doller-store laser pointer as light source, ordinary glass-sheet as beam splitter and ordinary mirrors as laser reflectors and a usual film camera as laser film ? Are there any other simple alternatives for film ?
A cheapo laser pointer will probably not provide enough power. Once you spread the beam (you need a lens as well) it will greatly loose power. You CAN use laser pointers to make holograms, you just need a more powerful one and the depth you can record may not be a good as a more powerful laser. A cheap $10 one should work, I just doubt a dollar store one would.
Now, for using glass as a beam splitter. I have heard of people using specially coated glass that is easy to get that results in a close to 50-50 split. Regular glass is probably more like 10-90 and is probably not suitable.
Using a regular mirror is probably a bad idea as well. A good quality mirror for laser optics is going to be front coated. A regular mirror is back coated which means you will get 2 reflections, one off the glass and one off the reflective coating on the back. For holograms this would be bad since you want just 1 reference beam and object beam. The other reflection might interfere.
You will still have to buy the film though. Regular film doesn't have a high enough resolution. You might be able to find high enough quality film but it's likely to cost the same or more than the specially made holographic plates will.
You can make holograms for cheap though. If you're going to do it you might as well spend a little on it. Search on eBay and you should be able to find some good optics for cheap. It doesn't take much.
As far as simplest setup, I've seen people using styrofoam cups filled with sand to minimize vibrations. The laser pointer was held with a clothespin stuck in the sand. The other optics were arranged in the same fashion. You will most likely have to wait until the dead of night and do it on a sturdy surface for any chance in it working. Any vibrations will throw the whole thing off. Even a truck driving by.
