High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles An optical axis is a line along which there is some degree of rotational symmetry in an optical system such as a camera lens or microscope. The optical axis is an imaginary line that defines the path along which light propagates through the system. For a system composed of simple lenses and mirrors, the axis passes through the center of curvature of each surface, and coincides with the axis of rotational symmetry. The optical axis is often coincident with the systems mechanical axis, but not always, as in the case of offaxis optical systems. For an optical fiber, the optical axis is along the center of the fiber core, and is also known as the fiber axis. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Care And Cleaning Of Military Fiber Optic Connectors
In the world today, fiber optics are used in many military applications, on aircraft, spacecraft, and in rugged outdoor terrains. This is due to the fact that military fiber optic connectors are much more durable and can withstand brutal environments and extreme weather changes than when the technology was introduced. In this article, we'll look at some of the basics types of connectors and discuss methods of care and cleaning of a military fiber optic connector.
There are essentially 4 different categories of connector. These categories are: the Light Connector, the multi-terminus connector, the single terminus connector, and the COTS (Commercial off the Shelf) connector. Inside these different types of connectors, only some are to be considered "military":
As rugged as these connectors are, they still require precision when it comes to the care and cleaning. There are two different methods of cleaning military fiber optic cables depending on the connectors design.
Cleaning with Lint-Free Wipes and Solvents or Alcohol Pads:
Saturate your dry lint-free wipe with alcohol using a pump dispenser designed for use in a cleaning military fiber optic connector. The design of the pump dispenser keeps the alcohol free of dust and debris. Prepackaged, pre-saturated alcohol pads are also available for times when dry pads and solvent are inappropriate. With the connector end face down, wipe the connector with the alcohol soaked pad until clean and then use a dry pad to wipe the connector clean.
Cleaning with Swabs and Solvents:
Cleaning these connectors with swabs is especially useful for cleaning recessed connection points but can also be used to clean the entire connector. Insert the saturated swab into recessed points or apply the swab to the exposed surface of the connector and rotate the swab carefully applying different degrees of pressure. Check the connector for cleanliness using and optical microscope and repeat if necessary.
For a complete cleaning environment for your military fiber optic connectors, you will also want to use dust caps and canned air to prevent debris from collecting on the connectors while working. Though military connectors and cabling are designed to be more rugged than standard fiber optic connectors are, the times when the fiber optic connectors are open are when the fibers are most vulnerable. Taking extra precaution during cleaning and maintenance are essential to the longevity of your fiber optic network.

Optics is the branch of physics which studies the behavior and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it. Optics usually describes the behavior of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light. Because light is an electromagnetic wave, other forms of electromagnetic radiation such as Xrays, microwaves, and radio waves exhibit similar properties. Most optical phenomena can be accounted for using the classical electromagnetic description of light. Complete electromagnetic descriptions of light are, however, often difficult to apply in practice. Practical optics is usually done using simplified models. The most common of these, geometric optics, treats light as a collection of rays that travel in straight lines and bend when they pass through or reflect from surfaces. Physical optics is a more comprehensive model of light, which includes wave effects such as diffraction and interference that cannot be accounted for in geometric optics. Historically, the raybased model of light was developed first, followed by the wave model of light. In the thirtyseven years that have gone by since the first volume of Progress in Optics was published, optics has become one of the most dynamic fields of science. At the time of inception of this series, the first lasers were only just becoming operational, holography was in its infancy, subjects such as fiber optics, integrated optics and optoelectronics did not exist and quantum optics was the domain of only a few physicists. The term photonics had not yet been coined. Today these fields are flourishing and have become areas of specialisation for many science and engineering students and numerous research workers and engineers throughout the world. Some of the advances in these fields have been recognized by awarding Nobel prizes to seven physicists in the last twenty years. The volumes in this series which have appeared up to now contain nearly 190 review articles by distinguished research workers, which have become permanent records for many important developments. They have helped optical scientists and optical engineers to stay abreast of their fields. There is no sign that developments in optics are slowing down or becoming less interesting. We confidently expect that, just like their predecessors, future volumes of Progress in Optics will faithfully record the most important advances that are being made in optics and related fields. Breathing a breath of fresh air into the field of optics, this book is the first new entry in the field in the last 20 years. It provides readers with a completely modern approach to the subject, covering a wide range of topics. This includes detailed discussions on geometric optics, superposition and interference, and diffraction. Readers will also find the latest information on lasers, optical imaging, polarization, and nonlinear optics.
Symplectic geometry, well known as the basic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics, is also the foundation of optics. In fact, optical systems (geometric or wave) have an even richer symmetry structure than mechanical ones (classical or quantum). The symmetries underlying the geometric model of light are based on the symplectic group. Geometric Optics on Phase Space develops both geometric optics and group theory from first principles in their Hamiltonian formulation on phase space. This treatise provides the mathematical background and also collects a host of useful methods of practical importance, particularly the fractional Fourier transform currently used for image processing. The reader will appreciate the beautiful similarities between Hamiltons mechanics and this approach to optics. The appendices link the geometry thus introduced to wave optics through Lie methods. The book addresses researchers and graduate students. Get on Target Through Laser Bore Sighting
Whether you'll be hunting or target shooting, you'll want to get the most accurate results possible and that means adjusting your rifle scope so that it is balanced to your particular gun. That's where laser sights come in.
So you've taken the time to find a rifle scope that works for you, with all of the features you require, and made the financial investment this entails. It would be a shame to prevent yourself from getting the most out of your scope now. Don't forget to take the time to use a laser sight to help you zero in on your target.
The theory behind Laser Bore sighting is really quite simple. It's all about aligning your optical sight with the axis of your bore. This allows for optimum accuracy without having to expend extra ammunition. Since the cost of ammunition can add up, this can be extremely important when it comes to easing the burden on your wallet.
There are several different methods of bore sighting. The old school way is to do it by hand, which involves disassembling your rifle and physically making adjustments until the reticle is pointed directly at the target. This takes time and can be less than accurate if your eye is off or your hand shakes. Fortunately, there are several other methods which involve the use of sights and make the process a lot more convenient and more accurate.
A bore sighter with a collimator can mount on the end of your rifle and help to make adjustments for wind and elevation to get an accurate zero. A variation on this method is a magnetic bore sight, which mounts to your rifle with magnets. A Laser Bore sighter is the next step up from this and offers the maximum in efficiency and accuracy.
A laser sight projects a beam of light to allow you to zero in on the center of your target to align your gun. Laser sights are contained within bullet casings that fit the caliber of your gun. You simply turn the sight on and insert it into the barrel of your gun. The laser beam will then give you an immediate indication of the zero of your rifle, allowing you to make any necessary adjustments to properly align it.
