Ok i'm going to be doing some experimential laser works and stuff along those lines with some electronic mods. I'm curious how many mW does and 8x average Diode Push? ANd what is the mw opposed to a 16x.
I was thinking that a 16x just is faster adn was wondering if the laser diode pushed the same ammount of mW?

max 808nm output on most burners is about 100-150mw focused but there has been news of faster drives producing up to 300mW. If you really want to experiment with high power diodes like these you really should aquire the appropriate eye protection as the near infrared spectrum is nearly invisible to the naked eye when removed from its native device this laser is turned from a class I to a class IIIb laser which falls into a catagory of lasers above 5mW to 499mW and this classification is made as a catagory of power capable to cause blindness faster then the human blink reflex. Also the extremely small diode used in DVD burners are extremely static sentive and require a grounding strap and protective finger tip covers to prevent damaging the diode itself. This is a great level of science involved with exprimenting with bare diodes and pulling diodes from a DVD burner is probably the hardest wya to go about this, consider diodes readily available on ebay some of these are less then 60 dollars and produce up to 1 full watt (1000 mW) diodes are generally glued using optical adhesive and soldered using a flat conductor rather then wires makeing the desoldering process a real pain. You also will need to heatsink the diode because they generate cpious amounts of heat in the higher power ranges along with a proper driver circuit. If you want a collimated dot you will also need a 808nm collimating lense (very expensive abt. 60 dollars) the lense included in a DVD recorder is not a collimating lense but rather a focusing lense with a distinct focal point. so lets review you need

i wonder why no harm was made
ideal diodes conduct electricty only in one direct. In reality, reversing the polarity of the voltage across the diode will cause a small leakage current to occur. This will not harm the diode. The real problem become when you exceed the reverse breakdown voltage of the diode. Once you do this it will start conducting and usually destroy the diode.
Special diode (zeners) are made to conduct at specific reverse voltages, but LEDs are generally not so precise. Read the datasheet for the LED to see how much reverse voltage it can withstand.
It sounds to me like you never exceeded the reverse breakdown voltage of your LEDs.

Almost everyone today knows what an LED light is in the most general sense, but few are aware of how fast it is set to become the main source of general lighting in both homes and businesses. Everyone from the Department of Energy to environmental advocates are pushing the pace of LED general lighting development because of the dramatic savings in energy associated with their use, and the fact that LEDs use no environmentally harmful substances like some older energy-saving bulbs (i.e. compact fluorescents which contain mercury).
Although light emitting diodes have been around since the 1960’s, their use up until several years ago was confined to such things as indicator lights in electronic devices, traffic signals and instrument panels. It wasn’t until the invention of the white LED (in the late 1990’s) that people began to take a closer look at their ability to replace incandescent lighting in homes or businesses. Being a technology that uses a semiconductor to produce light means that the output and efficiency of LED lights is improving at a rapid pace; today’s LED replacements can achieve a life span of 50,000 hours while consuming 80% less energy than a standard incandescent bulb. LEDs that produce a warm white light were invented by accident in 2005 but will allow a person to replace their incandescent bulbs with a similar color light to what they’re used to. An additional benefit of LED lighting is that only a very small amount of UV or IR radiation is emitted, making it highly useful for locations where valuable art is hung on the wall or fading may be an issue.
The current market is full of LED replacement bulbs and lighting solutions, but it is also buyer beware. There is a lot of junk on the market today that if bought and tried will surely disappoint you. Well made LED replacement bulbs are still pricey and the cheap products on the market today, a lot of them being sold through big box stores, will not last nor produce or sustain a bright enough light.
