automobile wiring question?

I just installed a third brake light ( consisting of 10 led's) I wired it into the rear brake light (12 volt) The blinker also uses the brake light wire, it therefore blinks with the signal lights This is OK except it is wired to the left light and therefore blinks only when the left blinker is on I am thinking of connecting it to the right blinker also with diodes to prevent feed back to the left blinker light. Would this work and if it would, what size diodes would I need. This is being used on an electric golf cart

Why not hook it up directly to the brake switch? That way, it wouldn't blink at all.

How to light a 40 Light emitting diodes using 12 volts dc supply?

I have a project hotel and resort miniature and I’m in the process of lighting it. I buy 40 pcs of light emtting diode (LED) to use as lightings such as pool lamps, fluorescents, etc. and used a 12 volts DC power supply. But it seems it is not sufficient to supply all the LEDs. If I use series, 1 LED only is ok but if I use parallel 5 LED is ok. Can anybody help me in this problem? Thank you very much.

Different colours and types of LEDs develop different voltages across them when in a series string, and also they emit different light intensities.

To play it safe, I suggest that you use 10 paralleled strings of 4 series-connected LEDs in each string - with a resistor in series with each four-LED string to keep the current in each string at an appropriate level.

You must decide on the current you want in each LED. After that you must apply Ohms Law to calculate the value of each of the 10 series resistors.

For simplicity, assume each LED has around 1.8 volts across is when lit and that the current you want is 20 mA.

4 x 1.8 = 7.2 leaving 4.8 volts to be lost across the dropping resistor in each string.

The resistance value must therefore be 4.8/0.02 = 240 ohms.

From P = Volts x Amps the resistor should not get hot with 4.8 x 0.02 = 0.092 watts dissipation.

You would thus need a total of 10 resistors rated at 240 ohms and 0.25 watts.

There's room for safe experimentation.

Try stringing 5 LEDs in a chain and recalculate the value of the dropping resistor.

If the 12 volt supply is unregulated you'll have to measure the voltage it delivers on load.
